A 26-year-old man was fatally shot on Chicago's Near South Side Saturday night, his companion, a 25-year-old woman, was also wounded in the same attack, the Chicago Police Department reports. The Chicago Tribune detailed the incident, explaining that it occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m. near 21st Street and Michigan Avenue. Responding officers discovered the victims shot in the 100 block of East 21st Street.
The assailants had approached in a white SUV and began to randomly shoot at the pair as they walked down the sidewalk. The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was quickly taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, only to be pronounced dead later. The same hospital received the woman, who police said suffered a leg wound but was listed in "good condition." The details of the vehicle or assailants are still to be strictly identified by the authorities.
No arrests have been made in this drive-by shooting, and Chicago police's Area Three detectives are actively investigating the incident, as confirmed by ABC 7 Chicago. This tragic event adds to an escalating concern over gun violence in the city, though police have not released further information regarding the shooting or any potential motives.
The Near South Side community, familiar with the echo of gunfire, now faces the grim reality of yet another life claimed. The man's identity has not been formally released as officials await notification of kin.
