Following a nearly two-year investigation, Chicago Police have charged Govanni Hernandez, a 32-year-old man from the 6300 block of W. 26th St., Berwyn, Illinois, with the murder of a 3-year-old boy. According to a press release from the Chicago Police Department, Hernandez faces a series of felony charges including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Hernandez was taken into custody by the Area One Homicide Investigation Support Team on July 16, 2024, after being identified as the suspect who opened fire on a vehicle back in September 2022. The shooting, which occurred in the 4400 block of W. Marquette Rd., resulted in the death of the young child, and, injuries to an adult female who was driving the car. Hernandez's detention hearing is scheduled for today at the courthouse located at 2600 S. California.
The tragic incident that took Hernandez into custody unfolded when the suspect allegedly fired shots into a vehicle, which was driven by a 31-year-old woman, striking and fatally wounding the toddler inside. This act of violence shook the community and prompted a thorough investigation that culminated in the recent charges.
The Chicago Police have remained tight-lipped about specifics regarding the motive and the circumstances leading up to Hernandez's arrest. However, today's court proceedings may offer a clearer understanding of the events from that fateful day in September 2022 when a life was cut tragically short. The Chicago Police Department has not released any additional details at this moment.
