The City of Chicago is grappling with the aftermath of a violent Fourth of July weekend. The latest victim is Aaronayjah Jah Medley, a 17-year-old girl, who was tragically struck by gunfire barely an hour into her birthday celebration at a North Lawndale apartment, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Medley's shooting, which happened around 1:40 a.m. Friday has marked the 21st homicide reported from the holiday weekend's spate of gun violence. She was initially taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "grave" condition and was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday.

No arrests have been made in connection with Medley's death. According to details in the police report, she was sitting on a couch when a gun handled by an unidentified male discharged, hitting her in the head. Witnesses were able to quickly direct officers to the third-floor apartment where the incident took place. "I was in the kitchen when I heard the gunshot and ran to my friend," one of the witnesses told police, as stated by the Chicago Sun-Times. A gun was later recovered from behind the couch where Medley had been sitting.

"No one was reported in custody," as per the Chicago Sun-Times. "Her death was the 21st from shootings over the violent extended Fourth of July weekend that left more than 100 people wounded or dead."
