Crews from the local fire companies responded to the scene and were able to quickly control and extinguish the flames. As the fire, which seemed to have its genesis in the electrical configurations of the switch room, was brought under control, no injuries were reported. The fire department's swift action highlighted the preparedness of emergency services to manage potentially explosive situations in confined spaces like the belly of a seafaring craft.
The Boston Fire Department's social media update emphasized that there was no damage beyond the affected switch room, and no other parts of the terminal or nearby vessels were compromised. The timely response of fire services averted what could have been a hazardous event, given the complex network of wiring and machinery below decks which facilitate a vessel's operation but can also act as kindling for calamity when things go awry.
No official statement has been released on the cause of the electrical fire, as the investigation is ongoing. Nonetheless, proper containment and effective firefighting have been praised, which ensured that no crew members or terminal workers, often unseen but integral to our city's maritime commerce, were harmed. Details on the impact of the incident on terminal operations, as well as potential future preventive measures, are awaited.
