Burns, 54, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, according to ABC7 Chicago. The Illinois State Police indicated that the child, who was a passenger in an involved vehicle, is in serious condition.

Reports say that the shooting occurred just before 2:30 a.m. near 73rd Street on the northbound side of Interstate 94. In a bout of road rage, Burns allegedly fired several shots at the victim's vehicle, subsequently wounding the child. The young boy was transported by Chicago fire officials to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. A statement obtained by the Chicago Tribune noted that the state police did not provide further details on the child's condition.

Burns was taken into custody and appeared before Cook County Judge Deidre Dyer at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Monday. As detaled by by the Chicago Tribune, Judge Dyer ordered that Burns be held while he awaits trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 2 at the Cook County Circuit Court’s Branch 44.
