Canton, Massachusetts, is grappling with a series of unusual vandalism incidents involving supporters of high-profile murder defendant Karen Read. Rita Lombardi, Brenda Sweeney, and Jenn O'Donnell, all advocates for Read, have found their properties targeted with bleach-filled balloons, according to MassLive. Lombardi, who unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Canton Select Board, discovered bleach-stained remnants on her lawn for a week, while Sweeney reported a ruined garden and the strong smell of bleach.
The acts were not only direct attacks on their strong support for a contentious case but also an affront to their personal spaces. Occurring just before a pivotal court hearing scheduled for today, these incidents have heightened community tensions. "You can see it's got a splatter," Lombardi told NBC Boston, referring to the stained grass. Canton Police Chief Helena Rafferty described any act that instills fear or diminishes the quality of life as "unacceptable," in a statement obtained by NBC Boston.
Canton Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the defaced lawns, as the residue of the bleach-filled balloons could present crucial evidence. Chief Rafferty affirmed that the evidence would be handed over to the Plymouth County Bureau of Criminal Investigation for thorough analysis. Karen Read, meanwhile, remains charged with second-degree murder in the 2022 death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with the controversy seemingly seeping from the courtroom right into the streets where citizens like Lombardi, Sweeney, and O'Donnell dwell.
This case, which gained new momentum from a mistrial earlier this month, holds significant weight in Canton. Residents like Lombardi are not only active at Select Board meetings but also prominent in rallying for Read’s defense outside the Dedham courthouse. "These people are stuck in middle school," Lombardi said, lamenting the juvenile nature of the attacks and reflecting rising unrest among certain segments of the community, as shared in an NBC Boston interview. Read is set to return to court to face the legal challenges ahead.
