Chicago residents are on high alert after a series of armed robberies in the 15th District targeting individuals seeking to make purchases arranged through online platforms. According to the Chicago Police Department, potential buyers were drawn to the 600 block of N. Lotus Ave. for what they believed was a chance to buy a motorbike, only to be confronted and robbed by armed individuals.
The incidents, which occurred on different dates including June 23 and 29, and most recently on July 14, involved suspects presenting an offer online for a motorbike. The victims, once at the location, were directed to the rear where confronted with semi-automatic handguns with extended magazines, they were robbed of significant amounts of cash ranging from $3,000 to $3,500, along with their cellular phones, as reported by CPD. During one of these incidents, a victim's vehicle was also stolen.
The offenders are described as two to three Black males between 15 to 35 years of age, with heights spanning from 5'06" to 6'01". They were reportedly wearing dark clothing with hoodies, and it's noted that at least one of the individuals has dreadlocks or a braided hairstyle. Observing unique identifiers such as "scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc..." could aid in the apprehension of the suspects.
For safer transaction environments, the police recommend the use of nearby police stations as meeting points. If the public encounters any individuals or activities that seem suspicious, they are advised to "Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible, and don't touch any evidence," as outlined in the alert.
