Chicago has scored a healthcare hat trick once more, with two of its hospitals, Northwestern Medicine-Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Rush University Medical Center, being acknowledged among the nation's cream-of-the-crop by the U.S. News & World Report. The two facilities not only top the Illinois charts but also make the prestigious "Honor Roll" for 2024 – a roster reserved for medical institutions that lead in multiple types of care, as mentioned by NBC Chicago.
This year marks the 13th consecutive year Northwestern Memorial Hospital has received this honor, not to mention its "High Performing" designation in every one of the 20 assessed procedures and conditions—a feat only matched by eight other hospitals nationwide, thus, setting a significant benchmark for healthcare excellence. According to Feinberg School of Medicine News, Howard Chrisman, MD, President and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, expressed that their "continuous recognition would not be achieved if not for the dedication and commitment made each and every day by our physicians, nurses and staff."
The U.S. News rankings are significantly influenced by patient outcomes and experiences, staff adequacy, and healthcare quality. Rush University Medical Center, alongside Northwestern, was the only hospital in Illinois to be spotlighted on the national Honor Roll. In local rankings, both tied for the No. 1 spot within Illinois. Other Illinois institutions in the limelight include the University of Chicago Medical Center and Advocate Christ Medical Center, which landed at third and fourth position respectively, as per NBC Chicago.
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab also earned its stripes for the 34th consecutive year, reigning supreme in the realm of physical medicine and rehabilitation. As Northwestern Memorial Hospital retains its Honor Roll status, it also emerged as the top dog in Chicago and shared the No. 1 spot in Illinois alongside Rush University Medical Center. On a more granular level, Northwestern Memorial boasted national ranks in 11 specialties including Cardiology and Heart Surgery, where it holds the No. 7 slot. The institution's prominence was accentuated by the U.S. News' new ranking system, which forgoes the numerical ranking for Honor Roll hospitals, placing them at the leading position regionally and statewide instead, Feinberg School of Medicine News reports.
