Chula Vista residents experienced a tense situation yesterday when police responded to an urgent welfare check involving an armed individual. According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the incident took place in the 500 block of D Street and began around 12:30 pm, resulting in some residents being evacuated and others being instructed to shelter in place.

The situation escalated when the man reportedly discharged a firearm both into the ground and out of a window. Despite the apparent chaos, no victims were struck or targeted. The Chula Vista Police Department quickly activated its SWAT team and began negotiations. The suspect, described as a white male adult in his early 40s wearing no shirt and blue shorts, eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without further incidents.
During these events, the Police Department urged media personnel to await updates via their feeds, as the Watch Commander was heavily engaged on the scene. Residents were informed through emergency notices on their mobile devices and reverse 911 calls, with instructions to either evacuate or remain indoors depending on their proximity to the 520 - 552 D Street area.
After negotiations concluded, the individual emerged from the home and was apprehended by the officers. The Chula Vista Police Department later announced that the man had been arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm. Following the resolution, the blocked D street was reopened and the residents were informed they could return to their homes, as the area was rendered safe. The Police Department extended its thanks to the community and media for their cooperation and patience during the management of the incident.
