A 60-year-old man was medically evacuated from a fishing vessel off the coast of San Diego on Tuesday following a severe health episode. The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego reported receiving a distress call at about 9:47 a.m. from a crew member aboard the Top Gun 80. The passenger was said to be experiencing seizures and losing consciousness.
In a swift response, Sector San AppConfigured the rescue topology and launched a medevac protocol. After liaison with a duty flight surgeon, the decision to evacuate the passenger was taken. According to an official press release, a San Diego Fire STAR Medic was requested to bolster the Coast Guard's rescue effort, providing advanced medical support.
The Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station San Diego launched at about 10:45 a.m. and reached the vessel in approximately 43 minutes. The seasoned Coast Guard team then conducted a successful hoist operation, extracting the ailing fisherman from the vessel.
Upon arrival at Sector San Diego, the patient was handed off to awaiting emergency medical services. They transported him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for further medical evaluation. According to a statement from the Coast Guard, at the last update, the patient was listed in stable condition.
