The Columbus Fire Department successfully rescued two individuals, a juvenile and an adult male, from the east fork of the White River near Mill Race Park on Sunday. First responders were dispatched to the scene around 6:34 p.m. after receiving reports of a distressed swimper. Officers from the Columbus Police Department discovered the pair on a riverbank just north of the Mill Race Park boat ramp, as detailed in a press release reported by Fox59.
The rescue operation unfolded when a man leapt into the turbulent river waters to save a drowning 13-year-old, as both were then unable to climb the steep bank. Upon arrival, CFD launched an inflatable rescue boat and successfully extracted both individuals to safety, a story captured by WTHR. The act has been hailed as courageous by onlookers and the department itself, commending the swift actions that prevented a possible tragedy.
Alongside commending the heroic efforts, a spokesperson for the Columbus Fire Department issued a caution concerning the inherent dangers of river swimming. The spokesperson stated, "We salute the efforts of the passerby for his courageous act of helping this child," as informed by Local News Digital. The advisory highlighted the unpredictable currents and hidden underwater obstacles that pose significant risks compared to controlled environments like swimming pools.
