A tragic hit-and-run incident took the life of a spearfisherman in the Florida Keys on Friday, authorities confirmed. In the waters off Mile Marker 39, near Ohio and Missouri keys, the boater was fatally struck at around 1:15 p.m., according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Details regarding the identity of the victim remain unshared at this time; however, it was stated that he was an adult.
The MCSO is now actively on the hunt for a 32-foot Contender boat, which is described as having a white T-top, a white hull, and a striking blue bottom paint, in addition to twin white Mercury outboard engines. The description was detailed in a press release, which also accompanied a photo of the boat in question. This matching photo was distributed in hopes of aiding the search and bringing the driver to accountability.
Authorities are urging the community to assist in the investigation and have requested that anyone with informative about the vessel come forward. Contact information was provided by the MCSO with the sheriff’s office encouraging calls to 561-357-4200 for any leads. The statement, which was outlined by the WSVN, hopes to reach as wide an audience as possible for potential witnesses to step forth.
