Tragedy struck a Deerfield Beach neighborhood after Kyrie Herman, a 6-year-old boy, lost his hand following the detonation of a firework yesterday morning. Broward Sheriff's Office officials and fire rescue workers were dispatched to the scene in the 600 block of Northwest 1st Terrace at around 10:15 a.m., according to NBC Miami. The authorities found the boy with severe injuries and he was quickly taken to a local hospital.
The accident left the child airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center for emergency treatment, suffering from a "complete hand amputation," as reported by rescue officials. A chilling dispatch heard over Broadcastify police scanner described the immediate aftermath of the explosion: "There is some type of explosion. A child's hand was blown off and there is something burning." Kyrie's father, speaking to 7News today, expressed his gratitude that his son did not incur more injuries.
The father has also stated that he was unaware how his son came into possession of the mortar firework that led to the tragic event. Now, as the investigation continues, officials are working to piece together the circumstances of the accident and whether there were any other participants involved at the time of the incident.
Reflecting on the road ahead for Kyrie, his father confided in 7News about his son's current condition. Family members, united in support, are expected to visit him at the hospital sometime today.
