A devastating tractor trailer crash on Interstate 75 resulted in a fire and the tragic loss of the driver's life yesterday afternoon, as reported by multiple outlets. Local 10 detailed that the incident occurred just after 5 p.m. when the vehicle, while traveling south, struck a guardrail and two pillars of the Miami Gardens Drive overpass. This impact trapped the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
All southbound lanes of the interstate were subsequently closed, disrupting rush hour traffic significantly. The collision and ensuing fire scattered debris across the highway, including heavy metals and dumpster materials, as pointed out by footage which captured thick smoke and flames emanating from the wrecked vehicle in the median. 7News cameras also showed rescue efforts and the extensive spread of burnt tires and auto parts across the road.
Firefighting teams arrived rapidly to extinguish the blaze. A statement obtained by 7News from the resilient efforts of dozens of firefighters, revealed details of the recycling materials being hauled by the tractor trailer. "It was carrying what appeared to be recyclable materials in blue containers. It looks like they had to pull some of the containers off to put the fire out," recounted Ralph Rayburn of 7SkyForce witnessing the scene.
The Florida Highway Patrol has provided information focused on the crash dynamics, stating the vehicle's unfortunate collision with the guardrail prior to its impact with the overpass pillars. Meanwhile, engineers from the Florida Department of Transportation were dispatched to the scene to assess the potential structural damage to the overpass. As of 10 p.m., crews were seen making progress, with a tow truck having removed the wrecked truck, as highlighted by NBC Miami.
With the northbound lanes of I-75 having remained open throughout the ordeal, the southbound section was ultimately cleared and reopened to traffic.
