An Elkhart County incident, culminating in an 18-hour standoff, resulted in the tragic death of a two-year-old boy and the arrest of 37-year-old Ryan Snyder this past weekend. According to WIBC, State Police first arrived at Snyder's Pendleton Drive home at 9:06 pm on Saturday after reports indicated the father was armed and had made threats against his children and law enforcement personnel.
Attempts at negotiation by the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team began around 12:09 am Sunday but proved futile as Snyder refused to leave the premises and later fired a gun before further barricading himself inside the home. The confronting scene escalated, prompting local law enforcement to request additional assistance from the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team, as narrated by FOX59.
Police ultimately forced entry into the home, where they discovered the deceased child and apprehended Snyder. While an older child, a four-year-old girl, was reported to be unharmed and released to a relative, the broader community reeled from the incident's emotional toll. "There are a lot of broken hearts among law enforcement who spent many hours at the scene trying to reach a peaceful resolution to the standoff," said Sgt. Investigations into the cause of the boy's death are underway by ISP and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit. According to the same WNDU report, the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office is expected to determine the charges against Snyder.
