Despite the quick action of firefighters who managed to cut through the security gate and quench the flames, the damage to the bike shop was extensive, and the disturbing event did not spare the neighboring barbershop which sustained damage as well; notably, there were no injuries reported, NBC Miami has covered the aftermath, showing images of the two affected businesses.
Witnesses near the scene shared their experiences, with one, Pablo, recalling the sound of multiple explosions that seemed to emerge from the bike shop after closing hours. "Heard a big explosion boom boom, bout two to three explosions," Pablo told WSVN. Locals, including teens Jimmy Joseph and Brandon Acosta who frequented the shop for their biking needs, expressed shock and sadness, emphasizing the tight-knit bond with the shop owner who they likened to a family member.
The direct cause of the fire, as confirmed by the owner's son, Josue Suarez was due to bike batteries exploding during cleaning; this emotional setback comes at a precarious time financially, with the family trying to navigate what steps to take next. "You can see on his he’s a bit worried, you know, about what we’re going to do about the money how the crisis is right," Josue Suarez explained in a statement obtained by WSVN. In addition to the property loss, the shop's feline mascot did not survive, though her three kittens born that morning will carry on her presence.
