After 45 years of serving up Mexican cuisine in Fort Lauderdale, Carlos & Pepe's has shuttered its doors, brought on by an impasse over HVAC system replacement costs with their landlord, a development that's left the community bidding farewell to a long-standing local favorite. The restaurant's closure was confirmed via an Instagram post yesterday, alongside news of an auction for their kitchen equipment that includes dining furniture and decor, signaling an unequivocal end to the establishment that has been a mainstay since 1979.
On the brink of dissolution, the somber reality set in when North Palm Beach-based auction house, Sunshine Auction Services, announced the "short notice sale" of an upscale, anonymous Mexican restaurant's contents—only to soon reveal it was indeed Carlos & Pepe's that would be leaving the "heart of the causeway." According to Miami New Times, hints dropped on Sunshine's social media about the location stoked rumors and concern amongst locals somewhat forewarning them about the impending closure.
The saga of uncertainty started back on June 30, taking shape publicly with an Instagram announcement about temporary closure for HVAC repairs, but the promised swift resolution fell through leading to a larger decision. Owners Paula and Richard Ehmke, who had taken over the restaurant in July 2023 and endeavored through renovations to re-open in October the same year, were the ones tasked with the heartrending update to patrons. "I’m writing to share some updates regarding our recent developments. After conducting estimates for HVAC replacements on several units and engaging in discussions with our landlord, we’ve unfortunately been unable to reach a financial agreement," Paula expressed on Instagram, as reported by Miami New Times.
Not all the spices have settled, however; there's a glimmer of continuity with the on-the-go operation, Carlos & Pepe’s on Wheels, which will persist by dishing out favorites for either local delivery or pickup a bit of reprieve for those loyal customers desiring to keep a taste of what once was. The switch to wheels is a pivot that carries a portion of the restaurant’s soul forward, as the Ehmkes cater to the community that has supported them for so long—Paula confirming that customers can still indulge in “beloved C&P favorites," per a statement obtained by Local 10.
