A Fort Lauderdale community was disrupted over the weekend when a man was charged with the first-degree murder of his former stepfather in a local mansion. According to 7News, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Darien Massad Turner, was taken into custody following the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Christian Colon.
Authorities reportedly received a distress call on Saturday morning and responded quickly to the scene at a home along the 100 block of Nurmi Drive, Fort Lauderdale. The police endeavored to rigorously investigate, cordoning off the mansion with yellow tape and spending several hours collecting evidence and witness statements. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has not yet disclosed what may have precisely led up to the shooting, as their inquiries actively continue. Residents and visitors expressed their shock at the violence erupting in their vicinity. In a conversation reported by 7News, area worker Jesus Sarmiento reflected, "It's not normal."
Raul Fernandez, visiting for the Fourth of July, remarked to NBC6, "I wake up in the morning, come outside, and see a bunch of cops everywhere. We have kids over there. We have little kids. Just to know someone got shot, it's like, wow." A neighbor also expressed dismay, stating, "Everybody is here with their family and friends, trying to enjoy the beach, sunshine and it's like 4th of July weekend, who would do something like that on this kind of weekend."
The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing. Fort Lauderdale Police continue to appeal for witnesses and information that might shed light on this tragic occurrence.
