The community of Fort Lauderdale is reeling after a drive-by shooting tragically ended the life of three-year-old Rylo Yancy this past weekend. In a press conference scheduled for Wednesday, Mayor Dean Trantalis and Police Chief Bill Schultz plan to openly discuss the recent surge in gun violence that has shaken the city. According to Local 10, the briefing will be held at Riverland Park, near the playground where the fatal incident took place.
Rylo Yancy, who was attending a birthday party at the time of the attack, suffered gunshot wounds and subsequently died at Broward Health Medical Center. Desperate to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice, authorities are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in Rylo's case. "Crime Stoppers also announced they would pay up to $5,000 for information that led to the arrest or arrests in the shooting death of Michael 'Kirby' McKinney Jr.," Local 10 reported.
The loss of the young child has left the neighborhood on edge, with many residents expressing their fears following the shooting near local athletic fields, a fire station, and two schools. Although police have successfully located one of the cars involved in the drive-by, there have yet to be any arrests made. As the investigation continues, the reason behind this senseless act remains unclear, as hinted by NBC Miami.
Joining the mayor and police chief in the appeal for increased community safety measures, Yancy's grandmother is also expected to attend the conference, which aims to shine a light on the pressing issue of gun violence. “Yancy was attending another child’s birthday party at the park when the drive-by shooting unfolded. The boy was hit by the gunfire and died from his injuries,” reported NBC Miami, adding a personal dimension to the public discussion.
