On Wednesday, the people of Greenwood were provided with an opportunity to shape the future of their city, as officials showcased a draft of the new comprehensive plan aimed to guide its growth over the next few decades. The unveiling of this plan marks a significant step in the city's journey to balance modernization with the inherent charm of its historic areas, like Main Street.
"I'm so excited for all the plans in old town," Greenwood resident Lauren Ashby excitedly shared in an interview with WRTV. The sentiment reflects the anticipation among both business owners and residents for the proposed changes. The draft plan, which was carefully put together after nearly a year of work, seeks to firmly to establish a vision that aligns with Greenwood’s values and aspirations for the next 10 to 20 years. The last comprehensive update of such a plan occurred back in 2007, necessitating a fresh look to accommodate the considerable growth experienced over the past two decades.
According to the Daily Journal, the document prioritizes aspects encompassing public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and quality of life, while focusing on strategic development and redevelopment of areas throughout Greenwood. The planning efforts included substantial community input, with city staff and HWC Engineering consultants engaging stakeholders, local businesses, and residents through workshops, meetings, and online surveys.
Gabe Nelson, Greenwood’s planning director, conveyed that the plan represents a communal vision, telling FOX59, "This is going to be a document that kind of shows them what our vision for the future is. But it does a lot more than that it can help position us for grants and funding." The plan outlines six focus areas for the city, including a revamp of the Greenwood Park Mall, redevelopment of Old Town Greenwood, and a new urban space east of I-65 on Main Street.
The draft details initiatives for not just beautification but also for creating new commercial and housing opportunities, improving the city’s walkability, managing congestion, and heightening safety. Furthermore, it identifies potential future roadway improvements, such as roundabouts and two new interstate overpasses. What emerges from this plan is a roadmap for Greenwood that envisions a city fostering both growth and quality of life for its denizens.
