An afternoon of routine traffic on the near east side of Indianapolis turned disastrous when a car and an SUV collided, leaving eight people injured, including six children. WISH-TV reported the accident occurred Tuesday around 3:34 p.m. at the intersection of East New York Street and North State Avenue. A gray Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and a silver Ford Explorer were the involved vehicles. Police have since arrested Tramayne Duron Harris, 27, of Indianapolis, who now faces multiple charges in relation to the crash.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), medics and officers quickly responded to the scene, managing to originally revive an individual who was believed to be dead at the scene. Officer Amanda Hibschman told WISH-TV, "The individual believed to be deceased was transported to the hospital and due to the incredible life-saving efforts of the first responders at the scene and the medical personnel at the hospital, this individual has been revived and is currently in critical condition." Impaired driving seems to have played a core part in the ensuing catastrophe, which has now culminated in Harris's apprehension.
Jehan Harden, a witness to the incident, described to WTHR a scene of chaos as he observed a child being ejected from one of the cars during the crash. "We were just praying for the little dude in the street. I pray to God he's alright," Harden recounted. This sentiment of immediate concern was mirrored by the bystanders who collectively attempted to safely console and assist the injured until the arrival of emergency services.
Officials have stated that the accident resulted in immense disruption and required an extended road closure, with the intersection not reopening until around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening. As the investigation unfolds, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office is to further review the case and determine the full sweep of formal charges to be filed against Harris, as suggested by a statement obtained by FOX59.
