A 34-year-old Indianapolis man accused of stabbing the new boyfriend of his ex-partner and forcing the mother of his children into her own car was arrested more than 150 miles away in Lima, Ohio, after roughly three months on the run. Gacien Baptiste had been the subject of an Indiana arrest warrant since June 12 and was booked into the Allen County Jail on August 27.
According to Fox 59, Baptiste is accused of stabbing his ex-partner's new boyfriend in the shoulder on May 25 after approaching him with a knife in Indianapolis. The woman, who had known Baptiste since she was 14 and shares two children with him, had been dating the victim for five months at the time of the attack, the outlet reports.
Court documents cited by the station indicate Baptiste fled the stabbing scene in a Toyota Corolla, but not before forcing the mother of his children into her own car. She managed to escape the vehicle, called a friend for a ride, and returned to the location of the stabbing, according to the same account.
Evidence Left Behind at the Scene
Police who searched the vehicle Baptiste left behind at the scene located his phone, his wallet with identification, and a work jacket bearing his name, the report states. Those items helped investigators build the case that led a Marion County judge to issue a warrant for his arrest on charges of battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal confinement, both Level 5 felonies in Indiana.
Under Indiana Code § 35-50-2-6, a Level 5 felony conviction carries a fixed prison term of between one and six years, with an advisory sentence of three years, plus fines of up to $10,000 per count. Indiana law treats criminal confinement involving a vehicle or deadly weapon as an elevated felony because of the heightened risk of severe injury or forced transport in domestic incidents, according to Banks & Brower.

Baptiste remained on the run until his recent arrest, the report notes, prompting a coordinated effort between local and federal investigators to track him down. The operation involved technical surveillance and tactical support from the FBI Indianapolis Field Office and FBI Cleveland's Lima Resident Agency, according to a Facebook post from FBI Indianapolis. Lima resident agencies like the one that helped in this case function as satellite offices providing technical and operational backup to local police on violent crime and fugitive cases.
Lima sits roughly 150 miles northeast of Indianapolis, a drive of about three hours along Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 33, according to Rome2Rio. Federal agents often rely on Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution warrants to cross state lines once a state warrant has already been issued, a mechanism explained by Banks & Brower.
Immigration Status and What Happens Next
Per FBI Indianapolis, Baptiste was an unlawfully present foreign national, though the agency did not elaborate on how long he had been in the country illegally. Under 8 U.S.C. § 1226(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, non-citizens without lawful status who are arrested for violent felony offenses are subject to mandatory federal immigration detention without bond, according to Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute.
Because Baptiste was arrested outside Indiana, his return to Marion County to face charges will hinge on Ohio's extradition process. Under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 2963 and the Uniform Criminal Extradition Act, an out-of-state fugitive must either sign a waiver or go through formal extradition proceedings initiated by a governor's warrant, with a 30-day window for the transfer, according to the Ohio General Assembly.
