Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti announced on Tuesday that the city will host the Big Ten Football Championship Game through 2028. The Big Ten Football Championship has not only found a consistent home but also is set rapidly to introduce a new game format in 2024. The update will pit the top two teams against each other for the coveted Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy, following their regular season showings. Additionally, 2024 will mark the expansion of the Big Ten to include new contenders UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington, "We believe Big Ten fans love coming to Indy, and their support helped push us over the top," stated Indiana Sports Corp President Patrick Talty in a recent Indiana Sports Corp press release.
Reflecting on the success of previous events, including last year's record-breaking attendance, it's clear that Indianapolis remains a favourite for both fans and the Big Ten constituency. Last year's championship game attracted a sold-out crowd of 67,842, setting an all-time attendance record, as gathered from WRTV.
With tickets for the 2024 championship slated to go on sale at a later date, fans can prepare to once again converge on Indianapolis, a city that has proven to attract significant sporting events. Besides football, the city was chosen to host the 2025 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), the NCAA Men’s Basketball Division II and III national championship games and NIT semifinals and championship in 2026, and NCAA Women’s Basketball Division II and III national championship games in 2028.
