A six-year-old boy tragically lost his life on Tuesday after falling into the Kankakee River, as confirmed by Kankakee authorities. The incident occurred at Beckman Park on Cobb Boulevard, where, according to Kankakee Mayor Christopher Curtis, the boy was playing with a ball before it led him into the river, CBS News Chicago reported.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene just after 3 p.m., following a report of the missing boy. The Kankakee police and fire departments responded, with additional resources called in, to aid in the search. The boy's family say he was trying to retrieve a ball that had gone into the water, a relative revealed the child's mother made a desperate attempt to save her son. A witness described the mother's screams which drew attention to the unfolding tragedy, "She turned around and was screaming, and by that time, I was like, 'Oh, my God, what's going on?' I jumped out of my car, and I'm looking, and I see this baby floating down the river," ABC7 Chicago reported.
Efforts to rescue the boy were hampered by high water levels and a strong current, difficulties exacerbated by recent rains. "Under normal circumstances, the river is still quite dangerous, but after the rain we've had in the last couple days, it makes the current much stronger, the water much murkier, and the debris coming down is much more dangerous," Kankakee Fire Department Chief Bryan LaRoche explained.
Despite the rapid response from authorities, nearby jurisdictions, and bystanders, the mission turned from rescue to recovery. Around two and a half hours after the boy fell in, officials located his body. The tragic loss cast a somber shadow over the community, with Kankakee Mayor Curtis stating, "Anytime you lose a life, it's difficult, but when it's a young boy or girl, that's probably even more tragic. They haven't lived their full life yet."
