An early morning encounter between San Diego Police and a man wielding a knife has spiraled into a fatality in La Jolla. The incident took place yesterday at approximately 7:00 a.m. on the 5400 block of La Jolla Boulevard. Multiple calls to the police had reported a man with a knife causing a disturbance before the officers' arrival led to gunfire and the man's subsequent death, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
According to the Sheriff's Homicide Unit, upon San Diego Police Department officers' arrival, they found a Hispanic male in his twenties by a vehicle that was stopped in the street. Approached by the armed individual, the officers, one of whom had been with the department for three years, commanded the subject to drop the weapon. Following his refusal, one officer discharged his firearm, hitting the man, who later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, as detailed by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
There were no injuries to the officers involved in the shooting, which is now under meticulous investigation as per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit has taken the helm of the investigation, ensuring a thorough examination of the events that transpired—including gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and piecing together the sequence leading up to the shooting.
The investigative process will also include a review by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the officers bear criminal liability for their actions. An administrative investigation will be conducted concerning the officer's firearm discharge.
