With the start of the school year around the corner, Lake County's United Way is rallying volunteers for its Stuff the Bus campaign. The drive, now in its fourth year, aims to supply students with essential school items. From binders to crayons, it's an effort that promises more than just the tang of fresh wax - it's about equity in education. The giveaway targets underserved youngsters, helping them gear up for academic challenges ahead, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The United Way's headquarters in Gurnee has become a collection point for donations and volunteers. People are encouraged to contribute by either dropping supplies at 330 South Greenleaf Street or through a cash donation that the United Way leverages to purchase supplies directly. "Our goal is for all kids to have an equal chance at success," Lori Nerheim, United Way’s vice president of marketing and communications, told the Chicago Tribune. With as simple as a $32 donation, a student gets supplied with a backpack brimming with all they need.

A diverse array of organizations is stepping up, too. Places like Waukegan Township, the LGBTQ+ Center, and others are contributing supplies to ensure local students aren't left behind. The effort symbolizes a communal thrust towards leveling the playing field—putting the tools for success into students' hands. "If a kid needs an extra pencil, the teacher can give it to them so they don't have to purchase a new one right away," explained Bobbi Selvik, United Way's manager of community engagement, as stated by the Chicago Tribune.

Volunteers play an integral role in the operation, with around 80 individuals pitching in to assemble the backpacks, including members from Women United. This united effort isn't just about short-term gains for the school bell's first ring; it's about activating a community to nurture its own, one pencil, one paper, one backpack at a time. Those looking to make a digital contribution can also sponsor a student with a $34 online donation, as reported by CBS News Chicago.
