A 54-year-old man was arrested in connection with the assault of a woman cyclist on Key Biscayne earlier this month. Authorities say the incident occurred on July 7 on the bicycle path along Crandon Boulevard, as reported by NBC Miami.
Andrew Deon Cobb, the man taken into custody, is facing a charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm after he allegedly struck 56-year-old Maria Galleguillo with a water bottle. The impact caused her to fall and led to injury. A nearby cyclist, who witnessed the assault, called the police, but Cobb, fled the scene before officers arrived. During the altercation, Cobb remarked, "you have to share the road, I've been hit by you guys before," according to an arrest report referenced by NBC Miami.
The arrest came after detectives, with the help of a good Samaritan, were able to identify and locate Cobb. WSVN reports that Cobb later confessed to the assault upon his arrest. Details of the confession have not been released.
Cobb has been charged with battery, and was booked into jail. His appearance in bond court was anticipated, but information regarding an attorney for Cobb was not available at the time of the reports. The motivation behind the assault appears to be rooted in a plea for sharing the road, a common tension point between cyclists and others using the path.
