Miami-Dade County has streamlined its approach to code compliance and consumer protection by merging two of its divisions. The Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) has announced the formation of the new Consumer and Neighborhood Protection Division, an initiative aimed at offering more efficient and comprehensive services to the local community. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava lauded the move, saying, "This merger will greatly benefit the community by providing more streamlined, efficient, and comprehensive consumer services," according to the official press release.
Starting August 1, Miami residents and businesses will find all consumer protection services consolidated in the Permitting and Inspection Center (PIC) at 11805 SW 26 Street. This location is already the go-to for code compliance services and will house additional facilities such as building permitting and certificate of use issuance. RER Director Lourdes Gomez emphasized the intention behind the merger, telling Miami-Dade's official website, "Unifying our code compliance and consumer protection services is part of our intentional efforts to improve our permitting, licensing and regulatory processes for our customers."
The new division will offer a range of consumer protection services including the mediation of consumer disputes, tow truck regulation, and enforcement against cashless retail prohibition. It also introduces new amenities for filing domestic partnerships. These services, which were once available at a separate office located at 601 NW 1st Court, will be fully accessible at the PIC. This office will be closing as part of the consolidation process.
For those preferring digital convenience, the announcement confirms that all consumer protection services are also available online, facilitating business license renewals, wage theft complaints, and the Community Association Registry. In-person services aren't the only option as the county encourages residents to utilize online platforms or call 311 besides using the 311DirectApp on smartphones for both code compliance and consumer protection matters.
