Big splash alert for South Miami Heights as Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces is set to hammer in the first nails of what's pegged to be a swanky new aquatics center at Southridge Park. If you're one to flock towards water adventures or some spirited splashing around, pencil in Monday, July 22 at 10 am on your calendars, when the ceremonious dig into the dirt for the construction kickoff will take place.
"We’re thrilled that this facility will bring residents together to cool off, exercise, and socialize," Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava shared with enthusiasm, per a statement. It's no secret that the area's had a rough go with a uncomfortably high drowning rate; so, a part of the mayor's buzz comes from the future pool complex's potential for expanding swim safety programs.
Southridge Park isn't starting from scratch though—it's already sporting a pretty packed roster with the likes of a 3,000-seat stadium that boasts a synthetic running track, not to mention a playground, sprawling open spaces and a multifaceted field. But this is the first shot at a public pool in the South Miami Heights neck of the woods. Aimed to be fully operational by 2027, the addition of the pool means Southridge High School can finally dip its toes into competitive aquatic sports.
"The size and scale of this project, as well as it’s location next to Southridge High School, really shows that the county is invested in our community. We know this will enrich and strengthen the lives of our constituents,” Miami-Dade County District 9 Commissioner Kionne McGhee beamed, signaling the significance of the park's growth. Everyone's looking forward to seeing this development make waves—not just as a fancy spot to swim, but a true beacon for fostering neighborhood ties and boosting life quality.
"We are thrilled to break ground on the new Aquatic Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a vibrant hub for our community," Miami Dade Parks Director Maria I. Nardi articulated. Yes, this project is all about the splash factor, but its design doesn't just stop at providing a watery playground. It's also tapping into the blueprint of becoming a site peppered with programs aimed to knit the community closer and propel the well-being of the young and old alike.
