As the summer heat intensifies, so does the plight of countless animals in need of homes. This season, Miami-Dade Animal Services is joining forces with PetSmart Charities to provide a beacon of hope during the 30th anniversary of National Adoption Week, slated for July 15 through July 21, 2024. The concerted effort aims to ease the burden on shelters buckling under the summer peak population season, a time marked by a significant rise in the number of furry friends in need of adoption.

Residents of the community looking to expand their families with a pet can look forward to meeting a variety of potential new companions at PetSmart locations in Aventura and Flagler. "National Adoption Week provides a vital opportunity for our community to step up and help alleviate the overpopulation crisis in our shelters,” said Annette Jose, Director of Miami-Dade County Animal Services, in an announcement from Miami-Dade County. By adopting, community members will not only give an animal a second chance but also make space for others still waiting for their forever homes.

The event puts a significant emphasis on finding homes for a large number of medium and large dogs as well as kittens that have flooded shelters. Last year, Miami-Dade County Animal Services tended to some 30,000 to 36,000 displaced animals. Currently, they house approximately 650 dogs and 130 cats that are ready and waiting to share their love with new owners. Available for viewing online, these pets can also be met in person at participating PetSmart stores, where volunteers and staff will assist potential adopters in finding their perfect match.

"For 30 years now, PetSmart Charities and local partners have been helping pets find people to love," Heidi Marston, Director of Pet Placement Initiatives at PetSmart Charities remarked. She continued with an affirmation of the ongoing urgent need, "Shelters across the country are full, and pets of all ages, breeds and temperaments are looking for their families. This National Adoption Week in Miami, we are putting a special focus on our large and medium k-9 friends, as well as the scores of kittens entering shelters & rescues in need of adoption – and we can’t do it without your support! If you have room in your heart and home, please consider adopting or fostering a shelter pet!” as reported by Miami-Dade County.

The adoption events are scheduled at PetSmart Aventura, at 21095 Biscayne Blvd., and PetSmart Flagler, located at 8241 W. Flagler Street, with visiting hours from Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Interested adopters can contact the PetSmart Flagrel store at 786-275-8300 for more information. Additionally, photos and b-roll footage of the adoptable pets are available upon request, offering a glimpse into the lives awaiting a transformative act of love.
