After a close call with tragedy, a longstanding hub of Cuban cuisine in Miami Lakes is back on its feet. Eater Miami reports that the Latin American Grill, a fixture in the area for almost thirty years, is throwing open its doors again following extensive renovations necessitated by a kitchen fire in November 2022. The blaze, which struck in the quiet hours of the night due to a fault in the fire suppression system, required the venue to close down but, thankfully, resulted in no injuries.
"I thought this day would never come," Reny Gonzalez, the owner and founder, told Miami New Times in a bout of raw relief. Known for its adherence to traditional Cuban fare served in a homely atmosphere, the establishment at 15342 NW 79th Ct. has held strong since 1997. Guests will still find their beloved Cuban sandwiches, ropa vieja, and churrasco on the menu, with price points that remain digestible in spite of the hiatus and the face-lift that ensued.
The renovations weren't merely cosmetic; they marked a major pivot for the restaurant's future, with Gonzalez investing $1.4 million into creating a modern and sophisticated space that champions the essence of Cuban dining. Among the upgrades are a new flooring scheme, an array of neutral subway tiles embraced by decorative patterns, and contrasting dark, distressed wood that anchors the aesthetic throughout the venue. In true Cuban spirit, a new lunchero station and double windows at the ventanita have been added to facilitate the lively exchange of bites and sips that are trademarks of the Latin American Grill experience.
True to its roots, the restaurant's revival has underscored its role as a cornerstone of Miami Lakes – a locale for casual meet-ups, a quick cafecito, or earnest community discussions post-work. "This is a place where people know one another and love to socialize while enjoying a nice meal at a fair price," Gonzalez reinforced in his statement. Signifying more than just a reboot, this relaunch promises the continuity of the legacy that Latin American Grill has cultivated over decades. Not to mention, Gonzalez's restaurant still dishes out a hearty breakfast for under $10, a rarity in the Miami dining landscape.
This Park Centre Shops mainstay isn't just making a comeback for old times' sake; it's setting a course for expansion. With another location already in Pembroke Pines, the remodelled Miami Lakes venue serves as the prototype for upcoming Latin American Grill restaurants.
