In a brief statement released by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), a previously missing teenager has been located and is reported to be safe. Fifteen-year-old Laila Brown went missing earlier but was found on the following day, details regarding her disappearance and the circumstances of her recovery remain undisclosed.
According to FOX59, Brown's initial disappearance prompted a search by IMPD. She was last seen on the 2000 block of North Berwick Avenue, a residential colony located east near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Found safe following day, IMPD did not provide further information regarding how she was located.
Describing Brown, the police had shared that she stands 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds, and features black hair with brown eyes. The day she went missing, she was wearing a black crop-top adorned with a red scarf in her hair, reports WISH-TV. Notably, IMPD believed that she might have been in need of medical attention.
The parameters for issuing an alert for a missing person were detailed by WTHR. An Amber Alert is typically reserved for children who are perceived to have been abducted and are in danger, requiring not just an age criterion but also definitive information about a suspect and their vehicle. Conversely, Silver Alerts cater to missing, endangered adults or children and are generally more common. Only last year was the scope for Silver Alerts broadened to include children as well. In Laila's case, no specific alert type was disseminated to the public before her discovery safe.
The IMPD's handling of the case follows the protocols that they have outlined but raises questions about the circumstances in which such alerts are deemed necessary and the potential consequences of delays in spreading information. The community's collective sigh of relief at Brown's safe return serves as an acknowledgment of the distress such incidents evoke. With Brown's well-being confirmed, IMPD has not commented further on the situation.
