Commuters facing the start of the workweek on the Palmetto Expressway were met with significant traffic delays following a multi-vehicle crash involving a Sunny Isles Beach police cruiser early Monday morning. According to a report by WSVN, the collision occurred around 6 a.m. in the southbound lanes just before Northwest 25th Street, prompting the closure of five lanes and creating a ripple of congestion stretching back to Interstate 75.
With traffic extensively backed up, drivers searching for alternate routes found some reprieve via Northwest 87th Avenue. Around 7:10 a.m., emergency vehicles, weary from the early morning chaos, and authorities began clearing the wreckage, managing to reopen at least one lane to ease the building traffic pressure but keeping express lanes shut tight, WSVN further reported.
Amid the turmoil of bent metal and blaring sirens, one individual was transported to Kendall Trauma Center; however, their condition, shrouded by the immediate concerns of public safety and the clearing of pathways for the living, remains unknown at this time. Ensuring that the thoroughfare would regain its purpose as a vessel of transit and not a barricade, authorities persevered in their efforts to clear the scene and restore normalcy.
