The Oakland Police Department (OPD) has reported a substantial seizure of over 500 pounds of illegal fireworks for the second consecutive day, responding to community concerns in a neighborhood in the 1500 block of 6th Avenue. According to their Facebook post, officers, acting on a tip from a community member, encountered a group of individuals who dispersed upon their arrival. Their investigation led to discovering a large cache of fireworks in a parked vehicle, which was subsequently impounded.
While no arrests have been made for the seizures, the Oakland Police Department has reiterated its dedication to safeguarding public safety by addressing illegal fireworks in the community. They have returned the confiscated fireworks to the Oakland Fire Department (OFD) for disposal. In preparation for the Fourth of July festivities, OFD has provided several collection barrels around the city to safely surrender illegal fireworks, hoping to avert potential danger associated with their unauthorized use.
Concerned citizens are encouraged by the OPD to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity regarding the selling or usage of fireworks via the Fireworks Tip Line at 510-238-2373. Collection barrels are situated at different OFD stations throughout the Oakland area, including well-known locations such as Station 1 at 1603 Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Station 3 at 1445 14th Street.
Locations for the collection barrels, like Station 4 at 1235 International Boulevard and Station 5 at 934 34th Street, have been strategically placed to maximize accessibility for residents wishing to comply with the safety initiative.
