With wildfires rapidly escalating in Umatilla County near Pilot Rock, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek enacted the Emergency Conflagration Act late Thursday. The Oregon State Fire Marshal's (OSFM) Green Incident Management Team is currently being mobilized, alongside structural task forces from Benton, Marion, and Polk counties, as reported by the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office. An Immediate Response was already enacted earlier in the day, which dispatched one task force along with a type 1 helicopter to the region.
Marked by significant lightning storms on Thursday afternoon, local fire agencies have been struggling to contain multiple wildfires intensified by gusty winds and parched conditions. According to the OSFM, these fire episodes quickly began to grow, posing imminent threats to both lives and property. In a statement, Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple underscored the obstacles faced by firefighters, mentioning, "The conditions our firefighters are up against are extraordinarily challenging and we are working to provide the needed resources to protect our communities from many wildfires burning across the state."
It has become a race against the clock, as firefighting crews labor tirelessly to halt the spread of fires. With Governor Kotek's activation of the Emergency Conflagration Act, it is assured that more state resources will be funneled promptly in an attempt to effectively manage the wildfires. The urgency of the situation is palpable, as Level 3 evacuation notices, commanding residents to evacuate immediately, have been issued by the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office.
The rapidly changing dynamics of the wildfires have necessitated constant updates from authorities. Residents are urged to stay informed through the Umatilla County Sheriff's Facebook page. Ruiz-Temple also made an appeal for public vigilance, stating, "I can’t stress enough the importance of preventing any new fires and being prepared in case you need to evacuate." Shelters for those displaced by the fires have been organized at locations including the Pendleton Convention Center and Grant Union High School.
