The Park Fire raging northeast of Chico saw a dramatic growth overnight, emerging as a formidable threat that led to urgent evacuations spanning across Butte and Tehama counties. As detailed by ABC10, the wildfire now encompasses 45,549 acres and is held at 3% containment as of 3 a.m.
Igniting near Upper Park Road in Upper Bidwell Park just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday and heading north, the blaze has quickly overtaken the Lake Fire to become the largest active fire in the state. In response, evacuations have been enacted in affected areas, with officials from Fox Weather reporting that over 3,500 people have so far been displaced.
Resources have been mobilized to aid the firefighting efforts, including the procurement of a Fire Management Assistance Grant which provides federal support. Additionally, an evacuation center has been established at Neighborhood Church in Chico for displaced residents, while separate facilities in Oroville are accepting both small and large animals.
Challenged by the searing triple-digit temperatures and arid conditions, over 200 firefighters are confronting the blaze, according to Fox Weather. Relief may be on the horizon, however, as forecasts suggest a reprieve with cooler weather expected over the weekend.
As the investigation into the origin of the Park Fire continues, residents within the potentially affected vicinities of Butte and Tehama counties have been encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts to stay informed about the latest evacuation orders and fire developments. Communication lines like a fire information hotline have also been activated by Cal Fire, providing vital updates and information to the community during this critical time.
