The accolades continue to stack up for Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), which has been recognized once more as a top-tier facility by discerning travelers, ranking third in the Travel + Leisure Magazine's 2024 World's Best Awards, a signal of the airport's enduring appeal and consistent performance in passenger satisfaction.
According to a Palm Beach County press release, this marks the eighth successive year that PBI has secured a spot among the Top Ten Best U.S. Airports as voted by readers. They evaluated aspects such as ease of access, check-in and security processes, options for dining and shopping, as well as the overall design of the aviation hub. PBI also proudly holds the title of the 4th Best Airport in the U.S. as per the Conde Nast 2023 Reader's Choice Awards and boasts the shortest overall TSA wait times as rated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
With over 8 million passengers having passed through its terminals in a single year, a feat that underscores the airport's popularity and efficient handling of the burgeoning traveler numbers, PBI is not resting on its laurels – expansion and improvement plans are already set in motion, "At PBI, we strive to offer world-class services, seamless operations and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the unique charm of our region," said Laura Beebe, Director of Palm Beach County Department of Airports, as noted in the official press release.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also taken notice, allocating a $17.2 million Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grant to PBI, earmarked for crucial upgrades including the rehabilitation of pivotal taxiways and the reinforcement of runway shoulders, a testament to the airport's strategic significance and the commitment to infrastructure at the governmental level these enhancements alongside the present expansion of Concourse B are expected to further elevate the traveler experience by adding passenger jet bridges, increasing dining spaces, updating the aesthetic with new flooring and a high ceiling that mitigates heat and glare, and above all, introducing facilities designed for passengers with special needs such as a nursing suite and sensory room.
PBI's influence stretches beyond the confines of travel conveniences, contributing a hefty $5.6 billion to South Florida’s economy, as per figures from the 2019 FDOT Florida Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study, illustrating the airport's critical role in the region's financial ecosystem as it connects more than 8 million passengers annually, with South Florida’s unique offerings and opportunities.
