In a tragic case that has drawn criticism over parole board decisions, Cook County prosecutors have shared a disturbing history of domestic violence by Crosetti Brand, who is accused of the fatal stabbing of 11-year-old Jayden Perkins and of severely injuring the boy’s mother, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Brand was released on parole only a day before the attack, a decision now bitterly lamented.
The violence erupted when Brand allegedly attacked Jayden’s mother as she was preparing to take her children to school. Brand had been released after serving time for a separate domestic violence case involving another woman. The prosecutors aim to demonstrate an "obvious escalation of violence" with evidence such as 37 harassing calls made by Brand while he was in prison for parole violations, as detailed by the Chicago Sun-Times.
As reported by NBC Chicago, the young Perkins died while courageously trying to defend his mother during the attack, with his 5-year-old brother helpless as a witness to the violence. Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling expressed his stance during a press conference, saying, "This was not just a vicious and violent attack on an 11-year-old boy and his mother, it was an assault on the very fabric of our community, targeting the most vulnerable among us." An order of protection had been previously issued against Brand, yet he still managed to orchestrate the brutal assault, resulting in Jayden’s death.
Brand now faces numerous charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors are pushing to admit Brand's prior incidences of stalking, threats, and physical abuse into evidence, to build a pattern that lends weight to the gravity of his recent alleged crimes. Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Gersch said in a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, "It shows this is a calculated act committed on the victims." The accused, serving as his lawyer, has asked to exclude his criminal history from the trial, labeling past allegations as potentially fabricated.
