The drive through Indianapolis is set to get a bit more complicated for the next three weeks as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) embarks on a significant roadwork project on the I-465 northbound. Beginning this week, a stretch between I-65 and I-70 will be entirely closed off to enable pavement repairs, joint repairs, and bridge deck work, following a similar stint of work on the southbound lanes that started on May 31 and ended on June 22, as FOX59 reported.
The closure is not just limited to the interstate itself, several entry ramps will also be shut down, barring traffic from accessing this major thoroughfare, and drivers are advised to brace for a snarl owing to these interruptions; the ramp closures include key connectors from I-65, Washington Street/U.S. 40, and Brookville Road/U.S. 52 among others starting as on Friday at 7 p.m. as per information gathered from IndyStar.
To mitigate the expected traffic disruption, INDOT has suggested an official detour route via I-65 northbound to I-70, hoping to ease the inconvenience for the affected drivers; "We received a lot of feedback on the opening of the southbound lanes. We really appreciate everyone's patience," INDOT's Kyleigh Cramer expressed, noting that commuters recognized the results of previous road works, in a statement to WTHR.
This construction endeavor is the second of six overall phases planned to fully refurbish I-465, with INDOT targeting a completion date of August 5 for the current segment, this segment of work demonstrates a broader initiative to refresh and rejuvenate major thoroughfares in the Indianapolis area an INDOT campaign that has been unfolding in measured, presumably manageable stages, as officials like Cramer emphasize the benefits to public infrastructure and by extension to the commuting populace.
