A somber Fourth of July tragedy took place in St. Lucie County, with an early morning fire claiming the lives of a couple. The fire broke out in the 3600 block of Avenue O and led to the deaths of Charlene and Robert Cash, as confirmed by Curlinda Sams to TCPalm. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, alongside fire and medical examiners are investigating the cause of the devastating blaze.
Officials responded to the scene shortly after 2:15 a.m., to find the home fully engulfed in flames, said Sheriff Keith Pearson. The intensity of the blaze was such that the house’s roof collapsed. The sheriff’s office revealed that they would remain at the location for several hours, with a mobile command bus brought in to assist in the investigation. The fire is currently under scrutiny, with no persons of interest or cause identified. Yet, unscathed Bibles were found amongst the debris, a detail noted by Sams in her interview with CBS 12.
"Our detectives, along with the Medical Examiner as well as the Fire Marshal are actively working this fire to find the cause because we want to provide closure to the family but also to the community. All the way around, it's a tragic situation," expressed Sheriff Keith Pearson, a sentiment echoed in statements provided to CBS 12. Relatives and friends of the couple, including Cash’s son, are desperately seeking answers as they grapple with the reality of this abrupt loss.
Neighbors described the couple as integral to the family and community, with Sams detailing Robert Cash's role as “Uncle Bob,” a veteran and family mechanic, and Charlene Cash’s invaluable presence as a retired caregiver and family matriarch, according to TCPalm.
They had been residents for more than three decades. Sams reflected on the harsh reality of the situation, saying, "It's sad because in these kind of situations you wish you could say goodbye, you try to recollect every single moment you had with them, then you begin to wonder what their last moments were like." Further details on the cause of the fire and the ensuing investigation are awaited.
