The incident began when Indiana State Police pursued a stolen vehicle that would eventually veer off the road into a ditch. The official explanation implies that the chase concluded with the suspect's refusal to willingly exit the compromised vehicle, leading to the interstate's temporary paralysis and the initiation of a standoff. Sergeant John Perrine of Indiana State Police provided these details in a post on social media, as per WRTV.
Traffic cameras captured the extent of the gridlock, with vehicles being diverted off I-65 at the Southport Road exit. The backup reportedly reached as far as one mile north from the scene of the incident, painting a tableau of inconvenience for many motorists that night.
The standoff came to a close around 11:45 p.m., when the man in question eventually decided to exit his vehicle. He slowly walked back to the interstate where he was then taken into custody, as detailed by WTHR.
