Mill Avenue in Tempe is poised for a burst of color and creativity as a new public art installation, "Sun Garden," is slated to brighten up the railroad underpass between Broadway Road and Apache Boulevard. The artwork will feature nature-inspired sculptures that are sure to catch the eye of passersby with their sunlight-driven play of colored shadows. According to Tempe's official announcement, these additions to the urban landscape are expected to be completed by spring 2025.

Tempe showcased its commitment to beautifying the city through a national artist competition, entrusting Arizona's Joseph O’Connell and Creative Machines, Inc. with the “Sun Garden” project. With the groundwork already in progress, the underpass is transforming into a dynamic space that will eventually include 15 sculptures made from steel and colored polycarbonate. The power-enhanced site will dazzle with lit colors at night, creating an enduring visual statement for the neighborhood.

Travelers using this corridor, whether they're among the 18,000 daily vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians, can look forward to an enhanced journey. An approximate number of Tempe High School students and Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital visitors will also benefit from the enriched environment. Mayor Corey Woods shared his enthusiasm: “This brand new public art piece will serve as a distinct marker, not just for this vibrant neighborhood, but also for the thousands that pass through the underpass on their way to an exciting play at ASU Gammage, a meal in Downtown Tempe or simply to work or school,” as per the official news release.

Residents should expect some disruptions with intermittent traffic lane closures during the construction phase. This undertaking also lines up with the Tempe Arts + Culture Plan that encourages major works of public art to serve as signature landmarks.
