Taunton Mayor Shaunna O'Connell has been charged with domestic assault, following an altercation with her husband last Friday. As reported by MassLive, O'Connell is facing charges that include assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The alleged incident, which led to her arraignment this Monday in Taunton District Court, has sent ripples through the community as details emerge about the conflict within the home of the city's leading official.
During the encounter with law enforcement, O'Connell's husband, Ted, recounted to officers that his wife bit his arm and attacked him with a gasket scraper, which is also described as a small type of crowbar. WCVN's coverage of the police report highlighted visible wounds on Mr. O'Connell that corroborated his description of the event. Meanwhile, Mayor O’Connell has conveyed through indirect statements a request for privacy and a note of regret from her husband over the police's involvement, "Ted and I have been married for 27 years. Like all couples, we have had challenges. We’ve been working through marital issues," the statement reads.
In a public apology outside Taunton District Court, Ted O'Connell expressed his remorse, "I apologize for calling the police. I apologize to my wife and the people of Taunton. It was a huge mistake," as reported by WCVB. This sentiment was echoed over the course of the weekend and following the court appearance, although the specific details surrounding the incident remain somewhat unclear. WHDH also reports that a not guilty plea was entered on Mayor O'Connell's behalf.
Despite these recent charges, Shaunna O'Connell has a notable history of public service. Before her tenure as the Mayor of Taunton since 2020, she served in the state House of Representatives, having won a seat in 2010. The events now unfolding place her career and the city's governance in a precarious state, awaiting the result of her next court appearance, scheduled for September 12, 2024, as noted by MassLive.
