San Francisco food aficionados have a new date to circle on their 2025 calendars. The Mess Hall at the Presidio is set to become the park's only all-day cafe, bar, food hall, and market. This latest addition to the already stunning Presidio Tunnel Tops is expected to open its doors in summer 2025, aiming to offer visitors an array of food and drink that captures the essence of San Francisco's diverse culinary scene.
Just two years after the Presidio Tunnel Tops opened its gates to the public—ushering in an era of new outdoor experiences in the area—The Mess Hall is poised to complement the park's natural beauty with its own variety of flavors, "Being a part of this lauded San Francisco destination is a dream come true. We’re excited to have such a creative team developing The Mess Hall, and we’re looking forward to enhancing the park experience for locals and tourists alike," Rob Gaon, a principal of The Mess Hall group, enthused in a statement obtained by the project's official release. From fast-casual to grab-and-go, the food hall aims to cater to all, not forgetting a provisions market that will feature everything from local specialties to imported favorites.
Garnering excitement is the news that James Beard Awarded Chef Peter Serpico will be spearheading the culinary offerings. His track record with the Momofuku restaurants and his own acclaimed establishment, Serpico in Philadelphia, bodes well for future diners, the Mess Hall press release indicates. Mixologist Zach Negin, on the other hand, will be developing a selection of cocktails, mocktails, and curated beers and wines, aiming to enrich the communal vibe of the food hall with elevated libations, his previous successes at La's Tabula Rasa Bar and Shop and the Silverlake Lounge set a precedent for what thirsty park-goers can anticipate.
In the background of this culinary development, the Presidio Tunnel Tops continues to flourish as a popular, albeit newer, San Francisco destination, having celebrated its second year just yesterday with an infallible blend of culture, nature, and now, cuisine. If history is any indication, the park—which gained momentum right from its opening celebrations, offering an array of food trucks and entertainment as described in a retrospective piece by Hoodline SF —is ready to envelop this new food establishment in its welcoming arms. With the Presidio Trust research highlighting a strong community desire for such a space, it appears this new food hall will be hitting the ground running, much like the park did upon its original ribbon-cutting two summers ago.
The partnership between The Mess Hall and the Presidio Trust underscores a commitment to both enhancing the visitor experience and embracing the longstanding history of The Presidio as a hub for community activity and enjoyment. As Daryl Ansel, director of hospitality & business development for the Presidio Trust, voiced, "Our research showed a strong desire for a social gathering space at the Presidio Tunnel Tops, and a food hall/market was a top choice," an outlook captured in the same press release from The Mess Hall. With assured steps forward, it won't be long before The Mess Hall becomes an integral part of what makes the Presidio a prime San Francisco destination.
