Shoppers in Vacaville are encouraged to be extra vigilant as there's been a rash of thefts targeting women's wallets right out of their purses. According to the Vacaville Police Department, this disturbing crime wave sometimes involves an accomplice distracting the shopper. At the same time, another does the lifting and other times it's a solo act swiftly executed while the purse is unattended, if only for seconds. "We've been seeing an uptick in cases where thieves are stealing wallets from women's purses while they shop," the department reported.
The aftermath of these thefts is not just the disappearance of the wallet but a trail of fraudulent purchases—sometimes racking up hundreds or even thousands of dollars. In a recent event detailed by the police department, a victim's wallet was stolen, and their cards were used for over $1,000 in fraudulent purchases. Now, authorities have released images of the suspects. "The woman in the white and black hat is suspected of being involved in several similar incidents throughout the central valley area (Modesto, Elk Grove, and Lodi to name a few)", stated the announcement.
For anyone with information about this surge in purse wallet thefts, the Vacaville Police Department has opened a line of communication. CSO England can be contacted at 707.449.5459, and the department assures potential informants that anonymity is an option. "You may always remain anonymous if you wish", they offered, a nod to the hesitancy some might feel in coming forward. Furthermore, they provide a cautionary reminder: "Some thieves only need a few seconds to do their dirty deeds and we don't want any of you to have to go through the banking and identity theft headaches these types of thieves can create", the Vacaville Police Department added, amplifying the need for public attentiveness and personal property security.
Keep purses closed and secure when out in public and remain alert to one's surroundings—especially if approached or engaged by strangers in shopping areas.
