A tragic accident occurred over the weekend at the Howard County 4-H Fairgrounds, resulting in the death of a 36-year-old Venezuelan man. Jose Julian Garcia Oropeza was electrocuted while setting up a food vendor with his co-workers, as reported by WRTV. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by those at the fairgrounds and the Greentown Fire Station crews, Oropeza was pronounced dead later in the evening.
Oropeza and others, while they were setting up for the highly anticipated community event, were all shocked. Unfortunately, Oropeza lost consciousness. Upon being rushed to a nearby fire station in Greentown, where advanced CPR was provided, he could not be revived, detailed a release from the Howard County Coroner's Office, mentioned in coverage by WISH-TV. Additional medical support, including a medevac helicopter that was called to the scene around 6:30 p.m., was not enough to save him.
The cause of death has been determined to be electrocution, per the official findings of coroners. However, what led to the fatal electrocution remains unclear as investigations continue by the Howard County Sheriff's Office and the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA). It has not been disclosed if the electrifying accident left other fair employees injured, adding to the concern surrounding workplace safety during such events.
The unfortunate incident prompted a swift response from first responders who, after being dispatched to a Greentown fire station, found Oropeza unresponsive with CPR in progress. In an updated release acquired by FOX59, it stated that around 30 minutes of concerted emergency care ensued before Oropeza was pronounced dead, leaving a somber shadow on the fairground preparations.
Investigations by both IOSHA and the local sheriff’s office are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of this incident, ensuring the prevention of similar occurrences in the future.
