Washington County has stepped up by activating no-turn-away shelters during the ongoing heat wave. Officials have stated that from noon today, anyone in need of relief from the scorching conditions can find sanctuary at designated shelters. These spots are in addition to the 440 current emergency shelter beds and rooms already catering to diverse populations, including families with children, veterans, and medically fragile individuals.
To ensure accessibility, the shelters are strategically located along various TriMet routes. The Washington Street Conference Center at 102 SW Washington St in Hillsboro can be reached via TriMet route numbers 57 and the max blue line, with Project Homeless, Connect serving as the shelter operator. Similarly, the Beaverton Community Center, situated at 12350 SW 5th St in Beaverton, is accessible via TriMet route numbers 52, 76, and 78, with Just Compassion handling operations. According to Washington County's recent announcement, around-the-clock services and meals are available, welcoming pets at the discretion of each facility's individual pet policy.
Residents are prompted to act with vigilance during this heat wave. Those witnessing an unsheltered person whose life may be at risk due to the extreme temperatures should call 9-1-1 immediately. For non-emergency concerns, the public is advised to contact the police non-emergency number at 503-629-0111 and request a welfare check. The community's active participation is key in safeguarding our most vulnerable populations amid these severe weather conditions. As temperatures rise, so does the imperative for collective action and awareness, ensuring no one is left to weather the storm alone.
The shelters will remain open 24 hours throughout the severe weather event.
