For anyone planning a trip through north Phoenix this weekend, circumstances dictate a pause and a pivot. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced the closure of the northbound section of Interstate 17, stretching from Happy Valley Road to Loop 303, effective from 10 p.m. this Friday, August 2, until the early morning hours of Monday, August 5, as reported by ADOT. The rationale behind this interruption is a pavement improvement initiative that promises to enhance the driving experience in the long term but requires some short-term compromises.
Commuters should brace for longer travel times and are advised to hit the road either in the non-peak morning hours or at night when the traffic volume is less intense. A detour will redirect travelers via Happy Valley Road to Lake Pleasant Parkway, then onto Loop 303 to reconnect with I-17. "Northbound I-17 drivers should avoid attempting to use local streets as alternate routes. This is a recipe for longer delays and inconvenience for all," an ADOT statement warned. Moreover, with closures at neighborhood entrances to enforce the detour, and officers dispatched to facilitate the traffic, deviation from the recommended path is deemed fruitless.
The undertaking is not solely about immediate repairs but also about the longevity of infrastructure. "Following the initial removal of an old, worn top layer of asphalt pavement along the freeway, crews have been replacing bridge deck joints and have started smoothing the freeway's remaining concrete surface through a process called diamond grinding," ADOT explained. This technique, previously applied to other Phoenix-area freeways, is a proven method for achieving a more resilient and smooth roadway. Though certainly inconvenient, this closure paves the way for a more reliable I-17 in the future.
With additional closures and lane restrictions expected as the project progresses, ADOT has made it possible for drivers to sign up for project traffic alerts on their website. Those who regularly traverse this section of I-17 should consider subscribing for updates. For those in the area affected by the I-17 Improvement Project north of Anthem Way, ADOT reminds drivers that there is a reduced speed limit of 65 mph within the work zone. Frequent updates on the conditions of highways across Arizona, including live data, are available through the ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site, their az511 app, or by simply dialing 511.
