Attention Phoenix drivers: brace yourselves for a significant road closure that could impact your travel plans this weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced that westbound Interstate 10 will be closed between US 60 and Interstate 17 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, starting from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, to 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, as reported by the Arizona Department of Transportation. The closure is due to a traffic shift on one of the state's busiest freeways.
This major shutdown is set to include closures of the ramps from westbound US 60 to westbound I-10 and the southbound State Route 143 ramp to westbound I-10. Further restricting movement, some other ramps will also be inaccessible from 8 p.m. Friday until the wee hours of Monday morning, notably the westbound I-10 on-ramps at Elliot, Baseline, Broadway roads, and 40th and 32nd streets, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
As drivers look for alternative routes, ADOT suggests utilizing eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) or US 60 to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to swing back to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) for re-accessing westbound I-10 past the closure. For those heading to Phoenix's West Valley, the Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) offers a bypass west and north to reconnect with I-10 at 59th Avenue.
On the other hand, westbound I-10 and US 60 traffic directed to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport should use northbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 and opt for the entrance via Sky Harbor Boulevard, as per the ADOT. When the interstate eventually reopens, a fresh lane configuration awaits commuters where existing lanes between 32nd and 24th streets will now be split by a roadway barrier—effectively creating a work zone flanked by three lanes on each side. Those planning to exit I-17 should heed ADOT's advice and merge into the right lanes before reaching 32nd Street.
