A morning blaze at an Attleboro duplex on Mendon Road caused severe injuries and significant property damage, according to reports from local authorities. MassLive reported that the fire, which started early yesterday morning at 9:13 a.m., resulted in a woman being critically injured with severe burns, while a second resident and two police officers suffered from smoke inhalation.
Upon arriving at the scene at 563 Mendon Road, two Attleboro police officers did not hesitate to enter the ablaze residence. They successfully pulled out the two trapped individuals. "The man and the police officers were taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital" for treatment, according to a statement from Attleboro Fire Chief Scott T. Lachance provided by MassLive. The woman, in her 40s, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with critical injuries.
As per NBC Boston coverage, the firefighters were able to confine the fire to just two rooms, restricting the damage to one side of the duplex. This containment allowed the other unit's residents, who had been displaced during the firefighting efforts, to return to their homes later that day.
The financial toll of the incident is estimated at $100,000 worth of damage to the home. While those impacted begin the process of recovery and rebuilding, officials are now focused on investigating the chain of events that led to this devastating occurrence. Both the origin and the cause of the fire remain under investigation as the community grapples with the aftermath of Sunday's emergency.
